Paintings made considering the philosophy of mind in relation to the body and how painting relates to these in me as the artist and in the person looking at them. We use phrases like ‘the body of the painting’ and ‘expression of the thought’ ‘in the mind of the artist’, ‘In my mind’s eye’ etc to discuss paintings.

A series of analogue paintings that consider how Articial Intelligence will interpret, catalogue and make meaning from abstract paintings, language and the sensibilities of art. What will an AI dictionary be like? How will the knowledge be stored and communicated?

These paintings are part of the Qualia Series that visually connects with the origins of language and the emergence of grid patterns, created centuries before hard-edged modernism. These can be seen in cuneiform, writing, maths, sewing, building etc. Only a few dedicated historians are able to read these ancient symbols fluently extracting the original meaning. The knowledge of each of these associations brings a different scrutiny and appreciation as to how and why the grid works. The formal grid structures arose in many cultures as a way of organising space and meaning but because these were generated by hand, expressive qualities were also recorded. I can’t read the meaning of these symbols but I am delighted by the organisation, the intent, the determination, the elegance and the touch, all expressions of the mind. My appreciation of these signs comes from qualities that I project and associate onto them. And when these irregular, gestural, anomalies are removed from product, when modern, digital, and universal techniques are used because consistent results are required, it removes a humanity. This is telling of contemporary life and in my eyes validates painting that is personal, poetic and wonky. Another comparison with the underlying grids in these paintings is with images generated by Northern Blot RNA tests and certain DNA computer software, that hold so much personal information but which only a few us can interpret and certainly not intuitively.
What will Artificial Intelligence and algorithms make of abstract painting in the age when the internet became the carrier of information?
The term qualia derives from the Latin neuter plural form (qualia) of the adjective quālis meaning "of what sort" or "of what kind" in a specific instance like "what it is like to taste a specific apple, this particular apple now". Wikipedia
